Ranks

Indian Army has three categories of ranks i.e. Commissioned Officers, Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks.

1. Commissioned officers :

• Lieutenant
• Captain

2. Junior commissioned officers(JCO) :

• Naib Subedar

3. Non commissioned officers (NCO) :

4. Sepoy (Soldier)

JCO ranks are Subedar Major, Subedar and Naib Subedar equivalent to Group B (Gazetted) posts. JCOs are promoted from Non-commissioned officers.

Allowances & Benefits

Other than Dearness allowance and HRA (House Rent Allowance), Army personnel are also given several allowances mentioned below (as applicable). Allowances depends on post rank and place of posting of candidate.
Dearness Allowance: 34% of basic pay as applicable for the post
HRA : 9% to 27% of basic pay depending on posting city class
Transport Allowances (TPTA) :

• Rs.  1800-3600 + DA for Pay Level 3 to 8.
• Rs. 3600-7200 + DA for Pay Level 9 and above.

Allowances for Officer Posts

• Military Service Pay (MSP) (applicable to the officers from the rank of Lieutenant to Brigadier) : Rs. 15,500/- p.m. fixed.
• Flying Allowance (for Army Aviators (Pilots) serving in Indian Army Aviation Corps: Rs. 25,000/- p.m. fixed (R1H1 of Risk and Hardship Matrix)
• Dress Allowance (Kit Maintenance Allowance, Uniform Allowance Subsumed in Dress Allowance): Rs. 20,000/- per year
• Siachen Allowance: Rs. 42,500/- per month.
• Risk and Hardship Allowance as applicable
• Field Area Allowances (For Lieutenant and above posts): Rs. 6300-16900 per month
• High Altitude Allowances (for Lieutenant and above posts): Rs. 3400-25000 per month
• Other allowances as applicable.

Pension after retirement:
@50% of the Salary / emoluments last drawn or average of last 10 months emoluments drawn, whichever is more beneficial.

Indian Army Salary 2024 and Post-wise Pay Scale of Various posts

Total Salary is the sum of basic pay and allowances. Below you can check Starting Total salary of various posts for new appointments.

Soldier

The starting basic pay of Sepoy (Soldier) / Jawan in Indian Army will be Rs. 21700 per month (Pay Scale Level 3). Total Salary of Sepoy will be Rs. 21700/- plus allowances.

Naik

The Pay Scale of Naik Posts is PB-1 Level 4 in 7th Defence Pay Matrix with starting basic pay Rs. 25500. Starting Total Salary of Naik will be Rs. 25500 + allowances.

Havaldar

The Pay Scale of Havaldar is PB-1 Level 5 with starting basic pay of Rs. 29200. Havildar Starting Total salary will be Rs. 29200 + allowances.

Naib Subedar

The Pay Scale of Naib Subedar is PB-2 Level 6 with starting basic pay of Rs. 35400. Naib Subedar Starting Total salary will be Rs. 35400 + allowances.

Subedar

The Pay Scale of Subedar is PB-2 Level 7 with starting basic pay of Rs. 44900. Starting Total salary of Subedar will be Rs. 44900 + allowances.

Subedar Major

The Pay Scale of Subedar Major is PB-2 Level 8 with starting basic pay of Rs. 47600. Starting Total Salary of Subedar Major will be Rs. 47600 + allowances.

Lieutenant Officer

The Pay Scale of Lieutenant Officer posts is PB-3 Level 10 with starting basic pay of Rs. 56100. Starting Total salary will be Rs. 56100 + allowances.
